Neural Energetics: Hungry Flies Turn Down the Visual Gain
نویسنده
چکیده
Food-deprived flies reduce the gain of a visual-motion-sensitive interneuron whilst walking, and the optomotor reflex to which it contributes, providing evidence of coupling between nutritional state, behavior and neural activity.

Nutritional State Modulates the Neural Processing of Visual Motion
Food deprivation alters the processing of sensory information, increasing neural activity in the olfactory and gustatory systems in animals across phyla. Neural signaling is metabolically costly, and a hungry animal has limited energy reserves, so we hypothesized that neural activity in other systems may be downregulated by food deprivation. We investigated this hypothesis in the motion vision ...
متن کاملCrossmodal Visual Input for Odor Tracking during Fly Flight
Flies generate robust and high-performance olfactory and visual behaviors. Adult fruit flies can distinguish small differences in odor concentration across antennae separated by less than 1 mm [1], and a single olfactory sensory neuron is sufficient for near-normal gradient tracking in larvae [2]. During flight a male housefly chasing a female executes a corrective turn within 40 ms after a cou...
متن کاملA Feedback Model of Attention Explains the Diverse Effects of Attention on Neural Firing Rates and Receptive Field Structure
Visual attention has many effects on neural responses, producing complex changes in firing rates, as well as modifying the structure and size of receptive fields, both in topological and feature space. Several existing models of attention suggest that these effects arise from selective modulation of neural inputs. However, anatomical and physiological observations suggest that attentional modul...
متن کاملA Neural Circuit Mechanism Integrating Motivational State with Memory Expression in Drosophila
Behavioral expression of food-associated memory in fruit flies is constrained by satiety and promoted by hunger, suggesting an influence of motivational state. Here, we identify a neural mechanism that integrates the internal state of hunger and appetitive memory. We show that stimulation of neurons that express neuropeptide F (dNPF), an ortholog of mammalian NPY, mimics food deprivation and pr...
متن کاملPlume-Tracking Behavior of Flying Drosophila Emerges from a Set of Distinct Sensory-Motor Reflexes
BACKGROUND For a fruit fly, locating fermenting fruit where it can feed, find mates, and lay eggs is an essential and difficult task requiring the integration of olfactory and visual cues. Here, we develop an approach to correlate flies' free-flight behavior with their olfactory experience under different wind and visual conditions, yielding new insight into plume tracking based on over 70 hr o...
